We are getting a little bit of snow and wind here. They are forecasting 30 inches. It is not enough snow though to deter kids from having fun!

  • Our Blackbird State Forest Trip

Date: 2010.01.29 | Category: Home, Peter | Response: Comments

    by Peter Olinda, 8-years-old

I needed to write a story to send back to my cousin, Matthew, in Georgia. He gave me a Flat Stanley to take with me on my adventures. I choose to write about our adventure in Blackbird State Forest.

On a Saturday afternoon we went to Blackbird State Forest. We first just rode around in the car then we got out. I forgot my camera. Next we walked in the woods. My brother Jeremy took lots of pictures of us and trees and the ground.

My sister, Laura, and I stood on a fallen tree. It was held up by another tree. It was fun. I wasn’t scared but I had this tingling feeling like I was going to fall. It was high!

Our family then walked the nature trail and I saw whale wallow. I had my video camera by then and recorded on video. When I finished reading the plaque at the end my dad scared me by coming up behind me and saying “Boo”. I jumped and hollered!

At the end of our hike on the nature trail Laura let me ride on her shoulders. I took videos of things. She joked with me about falling into the frozen pond. She didn’t drop me though.

Before we left the forest I took video of people on horses. One horse was fine but the other horse was scared of me. The horses were nice. They were medium-sized horses. Two of the horses were brown and I saw another black horse by the trailer. I like looking at the horses. I had never been that close to a horse before.

After we left Blackbird State Forest we went to Willey’s and bought fruits and vegetables. I liked sampling the oranges and grapefruits. We also bought subs and took them home. I loved the strawberries we bought. I gobbled them up. Dad told me I had to share but Mom agreed that they were sooooooo good!

I had fun on my adventure!

  • A Tale of an Adventure Long Ago

Date: 2010.01.14 | Category: Peter | Response: Comments

It happened long ago that a knight was at his post when the king called him. It was his first time before the king. The king was talking to a magician when the knight walked in. The king ignored him for a minute and he said to the magician “Use all your magic to protect the kingdom.”  The magician replied, “Yes sire.”

Then the king said to the knight “oh, come in”. “You called for me sire.” “Yes” replied the king. The king’s face looked a little strange from the other times he saw him. “Sire, why did you call for me?”

The king looked at the knight and said, “I have a mission for you.” “What is it?” The king continued telling the knight, “The princess has been captured.” “What do you want me to do and who has captured her?”

The king wanted to be assured that I could help. “You must acquire a high skill of fighting.” I assured him that I had been training for two years now. “You must travel to the land of Hungary and free some of my knights. You must go to the land of India and free some of my captains from the Aquirens. Your last task will be to defeat the Aquirens army. With my help I need you to complete two of those tasks. If you complete them I will trust you to rescue my daughter.”

I wanted to please the king and I told him I would try. I warned him that his daughter was in the land of Iceland. All the knights knew Iceland had most deadly monsters ever. It took one year of 70 army’s to defeat one of those monsters and then only half of the army was left.

He knew he would have to pass the Singing Sisters of Melody on his way to Honduras. In Honduras he had to repair the ship and move on. As he was repairing the ship he heard the sisters. Their voices were so melodic he had to be held to the bar of wood on the sail. He stood and true and he made it past but more danger would come…

    Christmas Angel 2009

It is Christmas time again and the time to update everyone on the happenings in the Olinda home. As always we have much to be thankful for and praise the Lord for His continued grace and mercy over the past year.

It is has been a year mixed with great joy and sorrow. We have lost some close and precious to us in the past year. Tim’s oldest brother, Walt, passed away in March of this year. We then lost Walt’s wife, Julie, in October. They are greatly missed but remembered during this holiday season. Lisa lost her cousin, Beth, in October. Beth left behind her parents, siblings, a young son and husband. We certainly think of her family during this time and pray for God’s love to overflow and sustain them during this time.

John Paulette GraduationJohn now is 21 and celebrated his fiancée’s graduation from college in August. Paulette graduated from Bob Jones University with a degree in Culinary Arts.  We anticipate John’s graduation in May from college and he and Paulette plan to be married on May 15, 2010 in Massachusetts.

James is now 19 and continues his studies as a Public Relations Journalism major at Bob Jones University. He was recently elected President of his society and is looking forward to this opportunity. He continues to write and is looking forward to being the best man at his brother’s wedding!

    Laura-BW-Web

Laura is gorgeous at the wonderful age of 17. She was able to do CIT at the Wilds this summer and a week of music camp at Bob Jones. She is looking forward to graduating from high school in May and going to college in the Fall. She has not decided on her college yet but hopes to study music education or missions.

Jeremy is in the 6th grade and growing taller and stronger every day. At the age of 11 his feet are outgrowing shoes at a rapid pace and I fear he may put John’s size 13 feet to shame. Jeremy loves his leopard gecko, Saphira, who continues to grow and thrive under his care. Jeremy continues to enjoy Sunday school class and has developed a new friendship at church.

    James Peter Jeremy Wrestling

Precocious Peter is 8 years old and continues to thrive in his mischievousness. As the baby in the family he resists the notion that he will have to grow up and maintains that everyone should take care of him. In all honesty he is growing up into a fine young man. He has matured a great deal over the past year with the loss of his uncle and aunt and the loss of a dear pet.

Tims Big Red NoseTim continues with his teaching at Cedar Lane Elementary. He has taken on extra duties as the tech coordinator for the building and has participated in many continuing education courses online. His favorite hobby for this past year has been Facebook. He loves adding new friends and family. If you are not already friends with him, look him up. He would LOVE to connect with you!

Lisa-WebI have worked on growing my business this year and have gained several new clients. I do a lot with social media and providing secretarial services virtually. It has been a great learning experience for me and I look forward to growing again in the coming year. The kids remain my delight and joy. I have mixed emotions about John leaving home for good but am thankful that he has found a beautiful soul mate.

Please feel free to leave comments and let us know how your family and friends are doing. We would love to hear from you!

  • Putting a Positive Spin on Things

Date: 2009.10.20 | Category: Home, Jeremy, Peter | Response: Comments

We have had a fair amount of stress in our family lately.  Because of schedule deadlines I asked Laura to give Jeremy and Peter their spelling unit pre-test and she did an awesome job.  I didn’t hear any major squabbling taking place.  As we were finishing lunch I asked Jeremy and Peter how their pre-tests went.  Jeremy replies “I missed six” and Peter replies cheerfully “I got four right”.

Way to go Peter!  He has learned the art of putting a positive spin on things.  How many times do we grouse and complain instead of seeing the sunny side of life?  Paul Chappel wrote in his devotional The Obstacles of Life “The difference between a successful person and one who fails isn’t the presence of obstacles along their path, but their reaction to those obstacles.”

What obstacle are you facing that needs a positive spin?  Remember that the glass is half full not half empty!
