• Does your child study?

Homework, homework, homework.  When will my child stop asking help with homework?  I hear many parents ask why teachers send home so much homework.  Unfortunately I don’t believe there is enough time in a school day for teachers to teach the students everything they need to know in class.  They send home work so the the lessons learned in class can be reinforced and hopefully the groundwork for the next day’s lesson laid.

As a home school mom I don’t worry so much about homework but about motivating my children to do their work.  I have one child this year who has struggled to remain on task and we are taking things a little slower this year.  That is one joy of homeschooling.  Looking at the student and what their needs are for that time in their life.

I was reading an article tonight by John Place, “8 Strategies for Parents to Help Children Improve in School“.  He has developed 8 tools for helping your child succeed.   In Strategy 5 he writes “On the surface, this seems diplomatic and high-minded.  Beneath the surface, however, it has a flaw: It fails to set clear goals and ignores the child’s unique capabilities.  You know your child better than anyone. If you want to maximize your child’s learning and achievement in school, try helping her set specific goals that are attainable yet challenging.”  As a parent I have to adapt my teaching methods to help my student succeed and also help him set clear goals of what HE needs to do to succeed.

I don’t think there is a better gift to give a child than knowledge.  If a child loves learning he will learn his entire live.  Embrace the learning experience and teach your children to as well.
