• Life: Full of Joy and Sorrow

Today has been a long day. It started at 4:15 a.m. and it is now 10 p.m. It started early so I could drive down to South Carolina to deliver one son to Grandmom so he can spend the summer with her and pick up another son from college.

The trip was extremely tedious but Jeremy and Peter were angels. Between traffic jams, rain storms and bathroom breaks it seemed we were getting nowhere fast. I was getting more tired and cranky and finally decided it was time to take a break and I stopped to find a hotel room. I never get a hotel room on the 13 hour trip but felt that I was not a safe driver with the storms, tiredness, etc.

Jeremy and Peter were so excited. They had been able to help a young Marine at the latest bathroom break. The Lance Corporal had recently returned from Iraq and Jeremy was able to help him in a small way. The marine gave Jeremy the emblem from his extra dress hat and Jeremy was on cloud nine. The man made a huge positive impression on Jeremy and Peter. It serves as a reminder that we never know how much a simple gesture or act of kindness can positively affect someone’s life.

After finding the hotel, food and some semblance of peace I received a call from home that a young boy from our church had been killed. He was riding his bike and was struck by a car. This little boy was about 5 and was as much boy as you could find. He was full of mischief and energy but had a beautiful, winning smile. As I watch my children sleeping I find it hard to imagine that young life snatched so early.

I praise the Lord that He is in control of our lives and although we don’t always understand why things happen we can rest in His promise that He will never leave us or forsake us. Thank you Lord!
